GRAIN ROT Extraction Guide: When to Leave

Decide when to extract in GRAIN ROT by weighing loot, vessel condition, Sparks, Rot, route knowledge, and Outpost goals.

Quick answer

Extract when the value already carried solves a meaningful Outpost need and the crew's ability to survive another unknown room is falling faster than the expected reward is rising.

Extraction is the core decision

A GRAIN ROT expedition converts temporary opportunity into persistent progress only when value returns to the Outpost. One more room may contain better loot, but it also adds distance, Rot pressure, combat uncertainty, and another chance for a vessel break. Good extraction timing is therefore a judgment, not a fixed minute count.

Five signals to evaluate

  • Carried value: does the crew already hold what the Outpost or quest needs?
  • Crew state: how many vessels are stable and how many Sparks are exposed?
  • Route state: can every player describe the path back?
  • Pressure state: is Rot, sound, or enemy activity reducing control?
  • Recovery state: if one more vessel breaks, can the crew still solve it?

Green, yellow, and red decisions

Green means the route is known, crew has redundancy, and the next room serves a clear objective. Yellow means value is already useful but one constraint is weakening; plan the return now. Red means an exposed Spark cannot be protected, the route is uncertain, multiple bodies are unstable, or the current loot solves a progression blocker. In red conditions, greed is not strategy.

Co-op extraction communication

  • Announce the decision before the crew splits.
  • Name who carries the most important item.
  • Place a stable player at the front and keep vulnerable members inside the route.
  • Do not turn around for optional loot after the extraction call without a new team decision.
  • If someone is missing, resolve their status before triggering an irreversible exit step.

After a failed extraction

Do not respond to every wipe by becoming slower and more fearful. Identify the decision that removed the last recovery option: no route memory, late Spark rescue, unnecessary fight, unidentified loot, or a push made after the objective was already complete. Change one condition in the next run and compare the result.

Clear answers

Frequently asked questions

What happens if everyone dies before extracting?

Anything not yet secured at the Outpost is lost; progress from previous successful runs remains safe.

Should I always fill my inventory before leaving?

No. Inventory fullness does not outweigh vessel stability, route knowledge, or a valuable objective item already carried.

Related questions players ask

How do you extract in GRAIN ROT?

Return to the expedition's elevator route with the crew and the value you intend to secure. Because layouts shift, remember the first landmark and begin the return before the group loses route or recovery control.

When should beginners extract?

A beginner should leave after securing one meaningful objective when the route is still known. Short successful runs teach more persistent progression than a deep expedition that loses every unsecured item.

Do you lose everything after failing a run?

You lose items not yet brought back if the entire crew is lost. Progress and resources secured during previous successful runs remain safe at the Outpost.

Is going deeper always more profitable?

Deeper exploration may offer more opportunity, but Rot pressure and distance from safety also increase. Profit only becomes persistent when the crew gets it home, so expected reward must be discounted by extraction risk.
